GREAT NORTHWEST BOOK FESTIVAL NAMES ‘THE HANFORD PLAINTIFFS’ FOR TOP HONORS

LOS ANGELES_ A true horror story about the abuse suffered by victims of radiation poisoning at the hands of the U.S. government during its push to develop atomic weapons during World War II is the top book of the 2024 Great Northwest Book Festival.

Author Trisha Pritikin’s The Hanford Plaintiffs: Voices from the fight for Atomic Justice (University Press of Kansas) is the story of a people betrayed. The focus of this grim tale is the Hanford atomic weapons production site in eastern Washington State. In this book, we hear the oral histories of people who were affected by decades of secret releases of the radioactive byproducts of plutonium production from the site and the debilitating impact on their health. It’s equal parts astonishing and scary, and it’s a well-researched tale of government malfeasance when it comes to making things right for those victims.
